1200 SEI 1986 cuts out

Postby daegerda » Fri Jul 31, 2015 9:51 pm

Last year the trouble started. just hit a bump and it quit running, before I could do anything it was running again, never did it again for 2 months, then it happened again, and a couple months later again, now it does it once an hour. only once did I have to stop and hit the start button and then it started right up and ran great. If it cuts out long enough to have to downshift then it backfires when it comes back to life. I assume its pumping fuel and not sparking so when it does relight it burns the fuel out of the pipes. So I figure its electrical and not fuel. All my dash lights and radio keep right on working, even the cruise will come back if its a quick cut out, Stator is hard wired, fork seal leaks, ;), checked some easy stuff like batt connections and the electrical plugs I can get at easily (about 3 out of 40) Help Please

Hitting a bump tends to lead to a short or perhaps your dogbone main fuse is shot and needs replacement?? :D :D

I had a similar issue with my 85
Tried everything possible... someone on this forum suggested changing out the igniters and NEVER had the issue again
Try that, easy repair and lets hope that solves the problem

A short or an open. If it was main fuse I would think everything would quit? And I'll check it. Thanks

Uh...I'm not positive bout this but...I seem to remember that some models of the wing, other than the 1500, had a bank angle sensor to kill the ignition if it fell over.
I seem to recall it being in front of the carb area, kinda around the ignition coil area.
Its worth checking and it could cause your problem.

Igniters are the pick ups on the magneto at the front of the engine near the timing belts, NOT spark plugs

Bad connection in the kill switch, maybe?

Hard wire the kill switch to by-pass it and see if this stops the problem. I still think the pickups are the problem... mine did all the same things and the fix was the new igniters.
