gl 1200 original seat

Postby jamie f » Sat Aug 01, 2015 9:10 pm

hello everyone.as i've recently posted,i aquired an 86 gl 1200 aspencade.had been neglected for years,so i put alot of time into it to get it up and running properly, everything from carb rebuilds, fork seals, wipers and oil, rear shocks, brakes, rotors(were so warped would almost shake the handlebars out of your hands when applying brake),stator, regulator(failed twice in 500 miles)alternator upgrade/modification,tires etc.well, the wife and i went out for a ride today and after 50 miles we had to stop for a break, had sore rear ends.has the original seat cushion and its not very comfy after awhile.my question is this, what are you all running for seats,or does anyone have a good comfortable seat that they'd be willing to sell?thanks all,,Jamie

I have a 'Road Sofa' seat, sorry it's not for sale, love it!

I've looked at that seat online and read the reviews.Seems to be the answer.Unfortunately,my motorcycle budget cannot afford that seat.I'm considering the " Saddleman double "cushion and cover combo.Has anyone installed one of these kits and how does it compare to the stock seat? The wife and I really love to ride this bike but cringe when going over 50 miles at a time.I believe I've read the term "butt burn"on this site somewhere and that is a pretty accurate description of what occurs...

My original seat had a tear in the side. I replaced it with a Saddleman and I'm very happy with it. It's a pita to get on but fits good. I'd suggest a pair of vise grips to aid in tightening it when stapling. I did use a pneumatic stapler.

I also got the double saddle seat kit and am very happy. Before, the wife couldn't ride 50 miles without stopping and then had to be talked into getting back on that torture rack. Since we got the double, we ride a lot farther and without pain. I will warn though, that mine is starting to crack at the seams but then, I don't have a garage to store it in so that may be the reason. I do cover it though (the bike) but it gets quite hot under that cover. I still would recommend it though great value and comfort. I had mine installed by a friend who does upholstery as a side job. It would be best to find someone equipped to do it as even he said it was a pita to do. You may have to modify the tongue in the front on the seat pan to get it to go back in as the seat bumps up tight to the trunk. Also, if you have a back rest that will also need to be modified as the double saddle is a completely different design and wider but still fits the pan.

Well I got my Saddleman double seat and cushion and put it on seat pan.The worst part was removing all the old staples and rivets from previous cover replacement's over the years.Fits great and very comfortable on the 25 mile test drive.Looks so nice on there, would like to replace seat back cover also, but can't seem to find matching one for seat.Anyone have any ideas or where did you get yours? Thanks,Jamie :D

I still have my original seat on my 1985 Aspencade, but utilize the AirHawk Cushion...similiar technology that is used in the medical field for wheelchairs and beds to prevent bedsores. Works well for me...took a trip of 4200km over a couple of weeks to Nova Scotia with no issues.
