Odometer Not Working

Postby revtmuller1 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 4:28 pm

Hi, the odometer does not work on my '87 GL1200A. Everything else works on the instrument cluster. I have had it apart and replaced the step motor for the odometer with (supposedly) new one. Everything else in the odometer seems to work fine, worm gear turns etc. and everything moves in the odometer unit itself. Any ideas for me? How do you test the motor to see if it is good? Could I have had a bad replacement step motor? Thanks.

revtmuller1,
I take it the speedometer along with the trip odometer work?
It's just the odometer that's acting up. Parts picture just shows the odometer plugs in. Is this what you mean by step motor?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yep, everything else works on the instrument panel. I have had the odometer unit out and have replaced the step motor in the unit. Still not working. I am thinking maybe I got a bad replacement motor. Is there any whay to test the motor? Is there anything else that would cause it not to work?

Going to have to research this one. I just replaced the speed sensor on mine. It's located at the front axle and nothing worked on mine. Speed zero, trip stuck at 1.8+ and odometer not working. The speed sensor was tested at the connector plug near the coils.
Hopefully someone else here has had this problem. I'll do a little research here and get back to you if I find something.
Sorry I wasn't much help.

OK, I did find some info. It's a diffrent site. Several fixes and repairs that can be made.

If it doesn't come through, type, "Goldwing step motor" in the google search bar.
Hope this helps, I am at a loss.

Hi Mooseman,
I've tried the fix the article suggested. The odometer is still not working. I have discovered that my speedometer is registering 4-5 miles per hour slow. I am wondering if this means the sensor is the problem? Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Terry

It is normal for the wings to read 4-5 low..... done by design for your safety.... at least you can't blame Honda for your speeding :)

Yeah thanks for that Mooseman. I did check with a local GW guy and he said the same thing. He also gave me another motor to put on the odometer. I'll let you know if that works. Best regards.

Just wondering if anyone has discovered an answer for my odometer not working. It's been several years since I first posted and haven't been able to come up with anything new. Thanks for listening.

Sorry I don't have an answer. I had mine out yesterday because of the intermittent not working. I used a tooth pick and put some Molly paste on the worm and drive gears and a drop or less of fine oil on the shaft where it meets the metal housing. I didn't take it further apart to the plug. I did spray electrical contact cleaner on the plugs to the instrument cluster and then a very light smear of dye-electric grease across the female end of the plug. Short test ride today, but hasn't had a issue for the past couple of weeks. Time will tell.

Thanks for that Mooseman. I might get ambitious this Spring and try some of that with mine and see. I will let you know.
