No brake lights with front brake lever??

Postby Ken Styles » Thu Aug 20, 2015 8:02 pm

Hi All,

1986 goldwing interstate.

Are the brake lights supposed to come on with the front brake lever?

Currently, they brake lights only come on with the back brake pedal.

Is that normal? Or is there something wrong with my wiring?

question is was it working prier to when you noticed it stopped working? your bike should have 2 brake light switches, one at the rear brake peddle and one on the right front brake lever. here is what it looks like....http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Front-Bra ... 2f&vxp=mtr since its such a cheap part to replace, you might want to think about getting 2 or 3 of them, but first check your fuses and the wires that plug into the switch itself. you could a blown fuse or a wire that came unplugged.

if you do an ebay search for the switch, im sure you can find it cheaper than that one that's listed in the link i gave you. just type in your bike's year, size and model and it should pull up a page of them. you should be able to find a few that offer free shipping too.

i had to replace mine twice when i was down in Florida last year because i was so close to the salt water for a month it swelled the plastic switch housing and seized up the pin that moves in and out when the lever was pulled and released. i bought 3 of them this time so if it happens again when i get down there next month, i'll have a few replacement switches with me.

Look at the switch on the front brake lever. It has several connectors on it:

The two we are interested in are the ones with the white/green stripe, and green/yellow stripe. Pull those two off the switch, and using a small wire or paperclip, with the ignition turned on, short those two wires together. Careful not to let that touch anything metal on the bike while doing it. The brake light should turn on. If it does, the problem is the switch - which is the problem 90% of the time. These switches just wear out - which is why Cyclemax keeps them in stock:

im sorry if the link to the switch i posted was not correct, but when i put in his bike's info, that's what it brought up. i didn't know that the brake switch was so different. i thought that most of them would be the same. my bad. even though they are different, for the price it still be worth buying 2 or 3 of them just to keep them on hand if in fact it is a faulty switch.

Hang on a second. I posted a link to the GL1500 brake switch, because I assumed this was for a GL1500, as it was posted in the GL1500 section. However, Ken's profile says he has a 1986 Interstate, which is a GL1200. Which is correct, Ken?

hang on 2 seconds, he posted it as an 86 interstate, but his profile shows it being a 96 goldwing. unless he has 2 goldwings, one of them are wrong :? . i looked up the switch for an 86 interstate.

I was kind of confused about that as well, but figured the profile listing of a 1996 trumped the post showing a 1986 Interstate.
The 9 and 8 are kind of close together when you are in a hurry. :D

Looked through some of his other posts however, and in some he writes about a 1986 1200 Interstate.

Hi All,

I apologize for the confusion.

I only have a 1986 goldwing.

I also found out that it IS in fact the switch!

Also, it seems that it's a universal switch is on ALOT of bikes!

I ordered a new switch and out of to be a little proactive I took off the old swich and used my wife's old nail file to clean some corrosion off of the touching terminals as well as the prongs and presto....it works again!

hey ken, glad you were able to get your switch working again, but to be on the "safe side" do yourself a favor, since these switches are so cheap, order 2 or 3 of them to keep on hand in case when yours stops working again and you cant fix it, you'll have a few of them handy. if it failed once, it WILL fail again. i went thru the same thing with mine and i just went and ordered a few. its a hassle to have to use the foot brake to get the stop light to go on every time you need to slow down or stop.

when you pull in your front brake lever, listen for a slight "clicking" sound, that will also tell you whether or not your switch is working. if you don't hear it clicking, its not working. that little pin that moves in and out will get stuck inside the housing, and there's not much you can do to get it to pop out unless you spray the heck out of it with some WD40. and even then its not sure that will get it unstuck, or take it all apart to clean it, but be warned, if you do take it apart, there's a VERY tiny spring inside of it that can pop out, and once that spring is out, forget about it, its done lol. (ask me how i know this :o)

good idea. and another good idea is to keep them wrapped in paper a towel and inside a plastic zip lock bag, that way they wont be susceptible to moisture and check on them every once in a while so you know they aren't wet or damp.
