1988 Aspencade fuel/ temp guage not working

Postby Das882 » Fri Aug 28, 2015 2:38 pm

Hi guys
I'm a newbie from NE Scotland having just bought my first Goldwing. The bike was bought in pieces so now having assembled most of the bike I've found that the digital fuel and temp guage does not work except for flashing up for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Has any one out there came across this problem??
Thanks
Dave.

You sure it's a 1988? 1987 was the last year for GL1200's, 1988 was the start of GL1500's.

The fact that they flash when you first switch on is a good sign. The first thing to do is to test the resistance of the fuel and temperature sensors, and make sure the continuity of the wires from the sensors to the dash is intact.

Thanks for your quick reply, yes it's an 88, it must of been old stock or something. I don't have a manual yet, so what should the resistance be? I'm good with the spanners but electrics are a black art to me.!

If you look at the label on the steering stem, what is the year that it shows?

I'm embarrassed to say that the fuel/temperature was an easy fix......put fuel in it and run the engine!!!! As I said I'm new to the Goldwing experience, I just assumed that the gauges would read something with the ignition on - oh you live and learn :D The reason I had not run the bike before was there was no exhaust system on it, so when I did finally get it running it sounded like a diesel, I then balanced the carbs (which were out) thinking it was that but no difference. I'm not sure where the noise is coming from, it sounds more like the top end......as I said, it sounds like a diesel clatter. Any one have an idea what it could be or is it terminal? I let the previous hear it when he came round with the manual, he said that it was not like that before he took the engine out..... he would wouldn't he!!!! I believe him as he seems a genuine sort of guy.
