Need a couple small parts/accessories

Postby Ken Styles » Fri Aug 28, 2015 7:42 pm

Can someone point me the right direction?
I have an 86 interstate and I need the leather snap cover to the left compartment next to the handle bar. Also I need to replace the cigarette lighter because it doesn't seem to work. Plus it's old and rusty.
I'm willing to do eBay but want to make sure I get the correct part.

Cigarette lighter can be bought at any auto parts store. I personally put one that has a lighted yellow ring around it. Light is on when bike is on. Very cool at night! The cover will be tougher. Just keep an eye out of a used bike being parted out or have a leather maker use the old one as a template and get them to make a new one. Good luck.

Also I see that RBGERSON has posted he has a bunch of 1000 and 1100 parts for sale. You might want to check with him for the leather piece?

You might check the guy in this post to see if he has any of the pocket covers left.
As for the lighter, I would just replace it with a new one through Cyclemax or Wingstuff. They are pretty standard and you already have the hole and wiring done.

Awesome thanks!

Regarding the cigarette lighter. Should I get the one with just prongs on the back? Or one with the neg and positive wire? I can splice into the existing wires? Or plug and play?

If the prongs fit the ends of your current wiring, it won't be a problem.
To be on the safe side, you could get the bottom one that includes the wires and just cut off the connectors and splice onto the existing wires.

Ken,

you might be able to get a local upholsterer to make you that cover including the snaps. Between the photo you have and the bike to make measurements a good one should be able to make it with a waterproof material.

There are several people on eBay that make those covers - I bought one for my GL1100 and was quite happy with it. Make sure it's made of marine-grade vinyl and marine-grade snaps.

This is the guy I bought mine from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GL1200-1984-87- ... d3&vxp=mtr

Another thought is to check Hopnel pouches that are made for that area. I know J&P Cycles handles them but this I found on Amazon: Hopnel H15LPC-2BK Left Side Double Add-A-Pocket

I suspect J&P Cycles has pages of their stuff.

Is there anything that WingAdmin doesn't have a handle on? I doubt it. Truly awesome gentleman!

As harvey01 said, I bought one of those Hopnel pouches. It's much more convenient than the snap cover for my sunglasses, and also for the Thruway toll tickets here in NY. It's much easier to open the Velcro flap with gloves on, than messing with the stock cover. There's also a zipper enclosure under the flap for extra security, though I've never had to use it. I think the snaps ripping out of the covers is a pretty common problem, especially when it's close to 30 years old. I also would suggest a marine lighter socket. They're more weatherproof than a standard automotive one.

have one on these and they are better than the OEM in my humble opinion, one worry I did had is that it sits high and might partially block the air vent on a hot day, so I installed some velcro further down the pouch to pull the flap a bit further down, but really I think its a bit of a non issue
