The underside of my bike looks "wet" like oil...*VIDEO*

Postby Ken Styles » Mon Aug 31, 2015 7:19 pm

Hey all,

1986 1200.

I saw spots of oil under my bike and I looked under and saw that it looked like there was a leak somewhere but I could not put my figure on it.

Here is a video.

Is this something I should try to fix by tightening up all the bolts I see?

Or should I take it the mechanic maybe it's a worn gasket.

Can I still ride it like this? Or is it dangerous?

You have the video set to private, so nobody (except you) can view it.

From what I could see - it looks like the drive shaft seal may have gone at the back of the motor,- looks very wet around the underside.- so peel that boot back and have a look.

The oil will flow backward when riding - maybe this is why there is a bit around the rear rim, and the diff.

I' would personally degrease the underside of the bike - and then watch for where it is coming from, and after a few rides would soon determine where.

I spoke to my mechanic and he said he can't fix it until next week. Is it safe to ride for a few short errands this weekend?

Can I buy the oil and refill the drive shaft?

What type of oil? Where ever do you put the oil in.

The oil leaking from the driveshaft seal is engine oil. So if you are OK with leaving an oily mess, you can safely ride it - just make sure you check the engine oil level and top it up if it is low.

I am not so sure I would ride it. As noted the oil is coming from the engine perhaps and then blowing backward. If that seal totally blows then oil could get on the rear tire and make for a squirrelly ride.

I agree the first thing is to clean the area and try to determine where the leak is coming from. Have you checked engine oil to see if it is low or dropping? Also check the oil level in the rear end. If both were filled at last check, is there a big difference with either.

Ooh didn't know that it was sharing the oil with the engine. Thanks for taking some of the worries out of my mind

Engine oil is different to the oil in the rear drive unit, and no they don't share the same oil.

Separate pieces and no fluid connection between the two.

Oil goes in the engine via the oil filler on the right hand side. The rear drive oil goes in via the 17mm cap nut on the drive itself.

Be careful undoing those and particularly careful when doing them up - do not over tighten them. :)
