EZ steer for 1985 Aspencade

Postby Lastnichol » Tue Sep 01, 2015 2:22 pm

I just got connected with GoldwingDocs. Looks like a great site. I own a 1985 GL 1200 Aspencade with a California side car connected to it. It has been sitting for the past five years. I have got it running but it is going to need a lot of tender loving care. The rig only has 18,000 miles on it and I would like to restore it.

We have used this rig to ride my wife and grandchildren around for many years. It was a blast. Unfortunately, at low speeds, the front end has a terrible wobbel in it. I have had a number of bikes with side cars and they all have had a slight wobbel when operating at low speeds. But this Aspencace/sidecar wobbel is nearly uncontrollable.

I am trying to locate a Easy Steer front end or other type of front end to put on the bike. If anyone has a lead on where I might find one, I would appreciate you letting me know.

I am also looking for a great mechanic that might have experience with GL 1200s and side car rigs. I am located in southern Ohio near Cincinnati.

Thanks!

I don't know that EZ steer makes a GL1200 kit - they do make a GL1500 kit, but I'm not sure if it would fit, or could be modified to fit.

The first thing I'd do is check the wheel bearings and steering head bearings for play. Also check the alignment between the sidecar wheel and the bike.

just the other day I was reading about the very thing on steves saunders site, and there may be a alternative solution for you there if you do a search, it involves using volkswagon dampers, being attached one end to the frame, and the other, to the lower front fork.

good luck,

There are "universal" generic steering dampers meant for installation on racing bikes available. If you can find mounting locations that don't interfere with the full range of steering, plus give you the geometry required to damp the steering throughout the steering arc, they work quite well. However, keep in mind that these dampers can mask the symptoms problem such as a loose or worn bearing that would normally become quite apparent were the damper not installed.

I too have been looking into the EZ-steer for a 1200.
They do make a 4.5 degree rake for the 1200, but it is very expensive.
Your looking at 1100.00 approx.

If you need help I am in Buckeye Lake. Have a few friends in the cincy area.

This is the only place I know of that has them for older Wings.
