Not charging

Postby lilpete1950 » Mon Sep 07, 2015 11:42 am

Ok. I have been through 2 regulators now. have hard wired the alternator windings. I cant get over 12 v at the battery when engine running. engine off and battery reads 12.5. I am about to rewire the 12 v line at the starter relay because the relay plug was bad , replaced but the plug on the other end had melted . I soldered a connector to the 2 incoming red wires and plug them in that way. it appears loose but hasnt given trouble. The real puzzle is that on the regulator plug, there are 2 green wires and I am showing a dead ground on both. As an addition. I lost self cancelling turn signals and speedometer at about the same tine I had charging problems. The alternator shows good on static tests. I am lost. let me add. 1984 goldwing interstate

Welcome to the forum
Have you tested the stator and regulator per the repair manual?

I recommend you convert to an automotive alternator and eliminate the stock charging system, higher output and eaiser to repair/replace.

The green wires are ground...Check for battery volts on the small black wire feeding the regulator module...It should be within 0.5 volts of the battery post.with the key on.

Please properly respond/reply, it's a necessity for forums to work properly and it will help others that later find this doing a search looking for an answer to their similar problem.

Is that measured between black & red or? Reason for asking is the voltage fluctuates when measuring. How solid is the .5V can it be .6V? What is ideal voltage?
