There's a couple things that can cause this. The one you want it to be is the shift/ratchet mechanism on the front of the engine, which is relatively easy to get to, and looks something like this:

The one you don't want it to be is the shifter fork inside the transmission. There is one fork that shifts fourth and fifth gear. If it is broken or bent, you will not be able to shift into fourth or fifth gears. This requires removing the engine, splitting the case and tearing it down.

It could also be a sheared shift drum pin, with the same consequences as a broken shift fork.

Many thanks response- how do I access the shift/ratchet mechanism- which part do I remove from front of engine ? would it be taht spring that is potentially faulty >
Where does one get a replacement ?
cheers

If it is the ratchet mechanism, you'll find it under the front engine cover - you can see the removal of it on the beginning of this How-To (for the 1100, 1200 similar): viewtopic.php?f=11&t=275

Hi

I removed the floor boards with the heel/toe shifter and now bike shifts perfectly- the culprit the connectivity between stock shifter and heel/toe shift. Stock pegs not quite as comfy as floor boards but at least i can now ride the bike !!
