GL1200 cooling fan 1984 vs. 1987

My 1987 cooling fan has a third wire that has a black box on the end that is mounted to the fan bracket. I bought a 1984 fan that doesn't have this third wire with the black box, and the bracket on the 1984 fan doesn't have the mounting hole for the black box. Why are they different? What is the black box for? Can I use the 1984 fan without the black box on the 1987 bike?

I just looked up 84 87 fan and both years take same fan. MOTOR ASSY., FAN 19030-MG9-003
Looking on ebay at different 1200 fans looks like some have a relay on them which would be the little box box.

I still have to answer the questions ...
1) Why did Honda add the relay? Is there a performance problem with the fan that doesn't have the relay?
2) What is the purpose of the relay?
3) Should I definitely not use the 1984 fan without the relay on my 1987 bike?
4) My original bracket must be replaced (long story). Must I install the 1987 fan with the relay on the 1984 bracket? This means I will have to drill a hole in the 1984 bracket and find a screw, washers and nut - not a big deal - I just want to know why and if it is necessary. I would much rather use the 1984 fan and bracket assembly.

It could be that the fan was drawing too much current and causing early failure of the thermo switch?

A relay is cheap, you could put a 20 amp automotive relay in there for under $10. That way you wouldn't have to worry.
