Drive line re-install on 1984 Aspencade

Postby Peeler » Sun Oct 11, 2015 12:11 pm

Once again I need the wisdom of other owners.
Took off rear drive assembly according to a you tube video and changed rear tire.
Upon install I cannot seem to get the drive line to insert into the universal joint spline.
Any tricks? Later I found a video that showed not to remove the drive line.:(:(:(
Thanks for all info.

Here is what I did I took some paper towels and put them in the shaft tube to hold the u-joint. It keeps the u=joint up then I slid the drive shaft up in to the u-joint. Then when I was done I used a pair of long needle nose pliers to pull the paper towels out before putting the rubber boot back on. It worked for me good luck.---------------Hal

This is one of the most frustrating things to try to do. I've had it work the very first time, in 30 seconds, and I've spent hours on it with no success. Luck of the draw, it seems.

I've pulled the universal joint boot off before, then inserted a long thin piece of metal, to lift the rear end of the universal joint up, to allow the driveshaft to fit into it.

The problem is that the rear end of the u-joint flops down and rests on the bottom of the swingarm, so the driveshaft can't push into it. Even when turning, it will still rest on the bottom of the swingarm:

Finally got it. Had to walk away for a day. Tried again and went in pretty easy. When I change tire again I will not remove the drive. Thanks to all for the help.
