What is this?

Postby Thom Burch » Sun Nov 08, 2015 9:42 am

I am rehabbing an 85 GL1200 Aspencade. Does anyone know what this is? It is located on the right side under the air compressor.

I can honestly say that I have never seen this on any of the 1200's that I have worked on. Kind of looks like a label on the top of it. If so what does it say? Also I would trace the wiring harness that connects to it and see where that leads you. Is there a match for it on the other side? Looks like, by the mounting, it is made for it.

You have me curious. You better tell us when you find out what it is. I wish you lived closer, I'd come over and help figure it out.

The wire led to the other side, but isn't plugged in and am not sure where it is suppose to plug to.

Are the ends of those tubes open - if so - could they be an air sensor to hook into the main ecu somehow?? measure air pressure ? I got nothing.

wow never seem anything like it on any 1200 I've seen, which would suggest it isnt OEM but an add on of sorts. Best guess scenario, I got nothing really but the two different size filaments, and the fact its tucked away under the fairing may suggest, really old decorative strobe lighting

Definitely not original, so it could be anything. I'd clean that label off the top and see if it says anything that gives you a hint as to its purpose.

The wire leading to it is a flat ribbon type, like a old data wire. Here is another picture.

Ok, so I removed it from the bike and the other side had the label on it. It's a motorcycle radar detector. The longer plastic prong was for x-band and the smaller was for k-band. The control box is obviously missing.

Well that is better than my guess... I did not want to be a smartbutt when you were serious, but now you have the answer, I thought it looked like the controller for your wife's electric frying pan.
