How to remove front wheel brgs 86 gl1200a

Postby geraldm » Wed Dec 02, 2015 11:42 pm

After reading up on the different threads on how to remove front wheel brgs. I decided to try the concrete anchor way ( mainly because I just happened to have a few of the right size ).. I just changed the way the anchor works.
Just took the anchor chucked it in my lathe and machined the anchor flat just so it fits into the brg. race .. I machined the anchor flat right up to where the slots end , if I make another I would maybe go another 1/4 inch past the end of the slots and you will see why as I natter on . I also increased the taper of the cone that is inside the anchor so it will go past the little lip inside the anchor tip allowing the cone to go deeper than normal into the anchor when the anchor bolt is tightened and swelling the anchor closer to the tip .
Ok place the anchor into the bearing race right up to where it is machined , take the cone that is also been tapered more than normal and drop it (pointy) end first into the anchor ( you will notice the cone almost goes past the depth of the brg before it stops .. OK now just take a small drift and tap the cone down in nice and tight till it is tight , now put the anchor bolt in and tighten it up REAL good .. Now the cone has swelled the anchor past the depth of the brg. stopping any chance of the anchor slipping out of the brg. race . Just put a drift in from the other side and give the anchor a few firm smacks and the brg will come out just like down town . turn wheel over and drift the other brg out .. done deal. Now take your new tool and put it someplace special so you will forget where it is next time you need it . If you made it the right size the brg. spacer will most likely come out with the first brg. and be stuck to the tip of the anchor .. Most people know someone with some kind of a lathe or machining device if not the anchors are made from soft iron so even a good file and a little work and you got one .

JUST A NOTE . the reason I wanted to change my front brgs. was because of a bit of the wobble thing and also my brakes like to pulse when using just the front brake so figured what the hay might as well change everything out as i am also doing a fork seal change and neck brg. change as well as brake pads which really dont need changing . After removing wheel from bike of course the first thing one does is stick his finger in the race and give it a turn to see if the brgs. are rough well mine would not turn ( had to stick a screw driver into the race to turn them and then I could feel the brg had a tight spot , no rust , nothing just a nice clean film of grease behind the seals looked like new . Can anyone shed a little light on that ,, I spun the axel in the lathe with out wobble so not bent . I just cant see why the brgs. were nice but hard to turn . Any ideas ??? Any way hope I havent bored to many people .. have a good one Geraldm ... Hell of a bike by the way .. likes the fuel though .

These guys were in tight but the further I get into things the more I figure the guy doing the work should have been a looking and a watchin and a holdin the light instead of doin ;) . Little things like the speedo drive in behind the seal being bent from not re-aligning the the two fingers up to the two notches in the wheel hub just things maybe some don't think about . Who knows could very well be that mister x drove the brgs. in on the inner rase as well , there were a few shavings inside from not getting the brgs . started straight when installing .
All said the wing gave me closer to 18,000 MILES this last summer with just a couple little issues solved in minutes on the road . runs nice ,starts nice , goes like hell if ya let it . Not new to bikes or fixin stuff just new to Honda , thanks for takin the time .

I hope the Mods dont beat me up to bad but this is what I do with a Japan RX7 Engines If they dont think it should be here they can chop it . dont know if I got this right or not ..

I like the RX7 engine film. My first New Car was a 1973 Mazda RX3 cost $3,500. I was 24 yrs old. I raced a 396 Corvette we ran neck and neck. It ran badass.
