GL1200 steering damper, non-sidecar

Postby Semephore » Sun Dec 06, 2015 3:19 pm

I've owned my 86 aspencade now for about two years. Went from an R1 that I couldn't ride because of a shoulder injury to this couch and I loved it. Once I hit my ETS date I took off from CA to GA to see family and it performed flawless......except the front end wobble. I went through the typical checks, lubed the bearings ect. I do like to ride one handed every once in a while, sipping coffee or whatever. After some research I couldn't find anyone who installed one beside sidecar riders. So I ordered one and experimented, this is what I figured out, hope it helps someone make their ride safer.

The base attaches to the frame right behind the fairing bracket, this required a little trimming but not noticeable.
The other end bolts to a modified plate at the bottom of the lower tree.

The end of the shaft stuck out just a little farther than I anticipated so a small hole was necessary to allow full range of motion. Do you see it by the vent on the lower fairing? After the first test drive I was so impressed with the improvement in the ride that I think this is something any GL1200 rider should consider.

nice work there, very impressive.I like the way you have it tucked away under the fairing
I never could totally get the wobble out of my 1200 either,, never thought about that.
I had an 88 and you couldn't make it wobble, now I have a 97SE and I had to add a damper to control the low speed wobble.
I have a sidecar but it had it before I added the car

As a slightly different approach to the wobble I found a fork brace on Ebay made by pgpowersports for $27 and decided to give it a try after reading about it on this forum. It fits under the OEM brace almost out of sight. There is a noticable change in handling and the typiocal wobble is gone,at least so far.

Has anyone fabbed a damper for the 1100 or does anyone know who manufactures one? ...seems like there would definitely be a market for one!
