gl1200 grinds when shifting.

Postby DD1957 » Sun Dec 06, 2015 9:11 pm

 my gl1200 is grinding when I shift, clutch is good, no sliping. Is it the clutch master or slave cylinder is my guess. Thoughts?

If it was me I'd start by bleeding the hydraulic clutch, it may not be dis-engaging, opposite of slipping.

I bled the fluid as well as changed it. It helped for awhile. I put new oil in the motor and it seems bad again. Err.

These bikes dont have a syncro trans I found a couple things that can make them grind a bit is to high of idle speed , possibly the type of engine oil you are using as well as the viscosity . they can be a tricky machine to shift to keep them from grinding a bit , i was using a 15-40 HD oil and the bike even when warm went into gear from neutral with quite a clunk and also it was a bit of a bugger to shiift with out the grinding thing . went to a 10-40 off the shelf oil and it made a noticeable difference after a few miles , no big deal but it did help . That's just what I found , can't speak for anyone else . it seems the thicker the oil the harder the thump. Just my opinion but the gears have cogs on the side that engage with the next set of gears so when the oil is to thick or the wrong type the gears just cant move fast enough on their splines to snap into gear quick with out grinding a little . you might want to look into that I'm sure some of the op have had or have the same problem .

When is it grinding? Just putting it into 1st gear or every gear? How high is your engine idling, sometimes just dropping the rmp 100-200 rpms can help. Also holding the clutch lever in for a few seconds before shifting allows the gears to slow down for a better mesh.

Thank you for everyone's input. It grinds when I put it in gear and when I shift. You can feel it bite between shifts. I use the Honda GN red oil 10w 40w. I have some moly lube I use to use on my guzzi's rr diff. I wonder if a little of this would help?

DO NOT USE MOLY !!!!!!!!!! It will make the clutch slip for sure. Check your hydraulic clutch system.

Thanks, on the moly advise. I didn't think it was a good idea.

Try firmer shifts. If you shift to slow they will grind. Shift with a purpose they like to be man handled a bit

I'm betting the slave cylinder is due for a re-build.They seem to collect all the crap, especially when the system doesn't get flushed enough.Easy and fairly cheap repair.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Well, I bought a rebuild kit for the slave cylinder seals and spring. Is the slave cylinder hard to get to? Will I have to remove the rr wheel?

Nevermind, I can get to the slave cylinder. Will oil leak out of the engine if I remove the slave cylnder?
