Poorboy conversion over charging trouble

Postby Pope82 » Fri Dec 25, 2015 11:39 pm

I hit some sand in a turn and landed the bike on its left side picked it up pretty easily and it seemed like the only damage was a scuff on the mirror and on the highway bars.drove fine the rest of the day. I went to the gas station the next day and the bike would not start low volts at battery. After I got a jump start I tested the battery at idle 12 volts and then Rev it up and goes from 12 idle to 25 volts at 3000rpm . Shut it off and would not crank up low volts at battery 9 volts. Changed battery and cranked right up . Idle 12 volts up to 13 did not attempt to Rev it up and then I started smelling smoke . I posted earlier to find out what the part was but I need to find out how I can limit the volt output from the poorboy conversion. The back of the plug for the regulator/rectifier coming from the stator was so corroded that it has not been plugged in since doing the conversion.can the output of the alternator be regulated at 12 to 13 volts max.

I would take the Alt. off and have it tested at somewhere like O'Riley auto parts. Where they will check for free. But sounds like you need another Alternator. At idle it should charge over 12V then go up to around 14 Volts. The voltage regulator keeps it from going to high. And 25 Volts will burn up everything. I would plan for a new or rebuilt alt. or even have that one rebuilt if you can find a rebuild shop. IMHO

Also check the alternator sense wire, if it has one, to make sure it hasn't become disconnected or shorted.

Double checked all the wires for any visible damage and could not visually see anything wrong. When I was installing the alternator I double checked with Don Pigott about placement of sense wire and was told to connect it to the acc. On the fuse box. When on the bike the volts were high when reved up but the turn signal cancelation relay was also starting to burn up. I took the alternator off the bike yesterday and had it checked on the way home from work today to find out everything passed except for dc volts which showed 9.5 . New alternator should be in tomorrow but the turn signal cancelation relay is estimated to be here Jan.5 . So, being impatient can anyone tell me if I can put it back together without the turn signal cancelation relay hooked up without jeopardizeing anything else or should I wait till I can put it all together ?

That relay should not have anything to do with it charging. I would unplug it and tape the wires off for now if thats what your asking? But look at your wiring schematic to double check.

Installed the alternator today and replaced the glass fuse under the seat for the radiator fan. Volts are looking good at the battery and alternator. headlight is not coming on and the radio comes on but no sound.still waiting on the turn signal cancelation relay to come in the mail.

I had to place the sense wire of the fuse box because the wiring for the stator and regulator where both beyond repair .

Yes,I guess thats the only option at that point.I was fortunate enough that my wiring survived my stator and regulator meltdown.
