The "1hfsc14" is the start of the bike's VIN.

1985 is when Honda started with the universal VIN format, "1HF" - 1 = made in USA, HF = Honda Motorcycle

All GL1200 frames are interchangeable.

Good luck with this job, Graham.
I recently replaced my GL1000 frame. Not a difficult job but a whole lot more to do on the 1200's!
One good thing to come out of this is that once you have it all that far apart, it would be rude not to clean/paint/replace anything that looks a bit grubby. The bike you end up with will look 10 times better than the one you started with.
Start the ball rolling with DVLA as soon as you can - they took 15 weeks to process my "change of frame number". !

Yes it will fit. Dont stress over the small stuff. What ever adjustments you have to make will be very small. I just put a gas tank from a 87 GL1200 into my 85 GL1200A no one could tell me for sure if it would fit. Fit just like a glove. If you're going to repaint anything this is the time to do it.

Sorry Graham, my previous answer disappeared. The frame will fit fine.
I steamed my engine clean, rubbed down the flaky bits, degreased the whole unit and sprayed it with a few coats of Simoniz Silver Engine Enamel.

I was dreading the job. It was only once I started pulling things apart that I realised what a golden opportunity it actually is. All those little "needs a quick tidy-up" things can be done properly. I made a pile of tinware to tidy up.....ended up spending £250 on powder coat although that did include powder coat on the replacement frame!
