Will anyone notice its the wrong color

Postby twocams » Thu Feb 18, 2016 10:16 pm

I was looking for a good front fender with nice paint. i found one on ebay for $63. Color looked right, price was right and was one of the best I've seen. So got it home and the color isn't the same. Think im going to use anyway. May look for another some day but dont think the bike will know the difference. What yall think? Just looks better than all the chipped paint on the old one.

Every bike should have an owner's signature piece, and this looks good. It could also be a good conversation piece as well - embellish it with a good story and everyone will be on your side! Enjoy

yea you bought an 86 fender, different color than the 85. Once on you will see it is much redder on the stripe and even redder on the color, the stripe will stick out the most. When I painted my 86 I took a panel to the paint store and had them put it under their paint match gun and I was able to buy stock auto colors that are very near perfect matches to stock. You could take your fender, get a match and just repaint, paint was about 120.00 a pint for each color + clear, reducer, hardener, activator, it's not cheap but toys cost money.
top pic is stock bottom is matched paint

Ya, I took the old fender to the paint shop where I get my stuff painted when needed. He said $150, I said see ya later. If it bugs me to much Ill get one repainted. Ill have to decide whether Im keeping the Wing or not. I want to keep the bike but haven't ridden it yet. Im putting money and work into it as if to keep. But may flip if things don't go as planed. Like to keep the wing and sell my 2003 K1200GT BMW Ive had for 11 yrs. Its a sport/touring bike but more on the sport side. My S1 vertebrae is deteriorating and I need the more upright ride. So I can ride for a few more years anyway. :x Your bike looks kool do you need a front fender

well, if you keep it you will love the ride. Ha ha... and no I don't need a fender, I just a few months ago finished my 7 month clean/rebuild on my 86. It does end up going farther and costing more than you first think, but the way I look at it, if I go through the bike front to back and do the work myself, then I know what I have when finished. I think I have about 3 grand in the rebuild not including buying bike, but I know I can ride without worry and a new bike is WAY more then that. Here is my build if you get bored and want to read it, if you go down near bottom of page is most of the build posts put together, maybe it will spur you on to keep it....enjoy the ride viewtopic.php?t=28189

I have read most of you build before. My last build took me 1.5 yrs to complete (1969 R69S BMW) But when rear main bearing cost $185, front bearing cost $114 and pistons cost $200 each. And your SS check only comes once a month. Just takes a little longer. My before and after.
I paid $2500 for the bike worth around $15,000 Its a keeper for now.

Nice build, it's good that it improved in value but I have grown up since very young around restoring model T's, oil pull tractors, boats, muscle cars, hell even a couple old forklifts and was always told " you don't buy and build it just to make money, you build it because you like it". I know some make a living just fixing and selling, it's just not my way, good you're keeping it, it's made to enjoy.

if you really want the original color, here's an idea, take your original fender to a body shop supply company, let them take a digital photo of both colors on the fender, and you'll have 2 almost perfectly matched colors so you repaint your fender to match your bike. they can make up a couple of 14 oz cans of spray paint. it might cost you about $15.00 for each color, but it might be worth it if you cant find an exact match, or they can make up a couple of pints along with all the other materials you'll need.

stuart.
