stator

Postby Geofd » Fri Feb 26, 2016 5:18 am

I know this has been talked about in depth....I have a chance to trade for what seem to be a nice 86 interstate
If the po doesn't know if the stator has been changed should that be a deal breaker don't want to do the alt. mod
but haven't seen a bike with one but should this be a deteriant??????

Does the stator NEED changing?
If the bike is charging ok, not a problem. If the stator IS shot/knackered/toast, then figure the cost of a replacement (Ricks?) into the deal. Beware, though, that charging problems could be due to myriad other faults.

look at the stator harness behind the left cover, if it doesn't look "cooked", if the oe connector looks good or if it has been eliminated and wires look good than buy it! also bring a voltmeter, with left side cover off, measure static voltage at the bat, anything in excess of 12v is acceptable, than start the bike and warm it up to a stable idle and measure the volts, approx 13.2 is acceptable than increase the rpm to 3000rpm, approx 14.2v than it's healthy for now. these bikes have the stator problem but they are worth dealing with it. my opinion is don't try to hammer the owner on what could be going wrong, if you like the bike and it's what you want than buy it and enjoy/maintain it. will you be doing the maint/repairs yourself?????

If its what you want and its a good deal. Dont just stand around talking about it. Go get it before he changes his mind...or you change yours. :)
