Engine problems

Postby SeaBee23 » Thu Mar 10, 2016 11:11 pm

Issue I'm having is that on my way home today I had problems keeping the bike running at idle, I adjusted the idle up but it was running rough. Checked timing and fuel. A couple of the wires are firing erratic and when I pull the left bank wires, they are firing but not change to idle. Any ideas? This is my daily driver and I am stuck. This is an 87 Interstate with 54k miles on the clock.

Could have a coil going out. I'd check the trigger input voltage for start. May have a bad connection that could affect this input, which will affect the output. Thinking low spark at idle, due to low voltage at idle, check charge level at battery also.

Those cylinders run off both coils and there is spark verified. Going to double-check the carbs for debris blocking the jets tonight.

Check for bad ground cable or connection and possible defective dogbone fuse. I had the same happen on my

85 I. Cleaned and tightened neg battery connections and changed out dogbone to 30 amp fuse. Worked for

me , hope it works for you.

I agree that your slow speed jets are restricting fuel flow. Have you looked for vacuum leaks?
