carb removal

Postby Old Guard » Fri Mar 18, 2016 6:58 pm

First off, thanks to all for helping with the spark problems on the 83 1100. That said, new question. Can the carbs on a 79 1000, and an 82 1100 be removed without lowering the engine? Doesn't seem to be a lot of clearance.

I don't think you need to remove the engine. You don't on the 1200. I have not on the other 15 bikes I've had. But sometimes looks like it would have been easier at the time.

On the 1100 I have removed all the bolts and cables, but can't get the carbs out of the frame. Do the carbs have to be removed from the breather box?

Remove air box. Remove bolt near top left front of box (kinda hidden).Remove choke cable at carb rack assy. remove fuel supply line. Remove vacuum tube. Hold your mouth right and after several times of cussing it..........out it slides from the left side. At least that was the way I removed my 1200's carb assy.

Works the same way on the 1100. They slide right out the left side.

got them out, but had to remove crossover water line to get enough clearance.

I have found it easier to remove the intake manifolds, then when you can move the set to the left remove the tops of the right side carbs. If you want more room remove the engine guard on the left side also. Pulled a lot of them on 1000s, 1100s and 1200s, Just my 2 cents worth.
