are there any Locals who can help me fix my wing?

Postby crimsonwing » Sat Mar 26, 2016 7:24 pm

Hello wingers, my wing is in desperate need of repair, I have spent the last two days trying to find a repair shop that is willing to work on my 84 interstate and they all say she is too old for servicing. Anyone here in San Diego, California who can help? I am more than willing to pay you the same rate as a licensed mechanic no problem, i just need help!!

Have you tried looking on Craigslist?
I've seen ads there for people who can work on Wings.
Just make sure and talk to them before agreeing to anything.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

Why dont you advertise for someone on Craigslist that works on old wings, or any older bikes if they want to make some $$$$$$. Or better yet. Get a book and some hand tools and get greasy.

haha yeah you're right twocams, and i really appreciate the support, it means the world to me. that being said, I think i may have found a mechanic! in case I have, I am going to make a post about what parts I should get replaced/repaired in the same repair session as it would gratly reduce labor costs. I should do the timing belts and gaskets for sure. im prepared to spend about 7 to 8 hundred if i need to, even though that is all my savings for a year haha

if you were in my area i would be glad to help, i like working on these bikes. im in vista every couple weeks so you never know? however as stated earlier, if it isn't broke dont fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! other than timing belts and "simple" maint you can pretty much gas and go like any other honda product. ive only had my 86I project for about a year and find it to be one of the best bikes i have ever owned! if you dont have a voltmeter to display charge rate than i would recommend installing one. $10 bucks off ebay. also i think the best way for you to make the repairs happen is you get the parts first and than find a mech to install them. Use this forum and make a list and let the members prioritize for you. with an $800 budget find a mech that will install at a rate of $550 in parts and $250 in labor.

If your going to use a stock alternator you have to pull the engine to replace. If its already using a car alt. will be easy to replace.

assuming it is stock, will I have to pull the engine out only if I want to replace it with another stock alt? or can I just use a car alt for easy replacement? which is more reliable?

Stock alt repair is usually replacing the stator.Remove engine. Car alt., look up Poor Boy on the net. More reliable but might be more costly to start with. You need to buy a book so you can get up to speed on your bike a little. Then when you read something here about the runninggeartoaducksass you can look in your book and see what they are talking about. And there ya go. 8-)
