i might need a new alternator, if so which one should i get?

Postby crimsonwing » Sun Mar 27, 2016 9:07 pm

Hey wingers, So I might need a new alternator to get my baby running again. if i do, Where should I get one at? is a used one ok? any aftermarket ones? also I keep seeing videos of "alternator conversions". What is this exactly? should i do this instead? thanks!! than being said, the real question is why isn't my alternator working? my wing turns on with a jumpstart but it quickly looses its charge and the bike turns off. I heard it could be a dogbone fuse, what and where is that? what are other possible reasons its not working?

unless you have a wing with a alternator already present and most commonly if so it would be under the left fairing, then you do not have a alternator at all. That being said you have a stator. Look up on the forum on how to check the stator. Also as for doing an alternator conversion. Im currently in the process of adding it to my bike. There's a lot of information in regards to installing them. BTW there's a guy who has a custom kit. his name is Don " Poor Boy " Piggott. Look that name up as well. If you desire to contact him for the parts PM me and i'll pass you his information.

Th'85 LTD an '86 SEI had a much larger stator than the other 1200s. It is approximately 490 watts where the other models have a stator that is some 100 watts or so less. Something to keep in mind.

make sure to get the 500w stator for your SE-I, the 350w stator for the carbed wings doesn't have enough power for your application
