I'd be VERY surprised if a 1500 final drive component would fit a 1200.

How about the final drive from a GL1100? Is it compatable with the GL1200?

scrbowler,
Negitave. I had a 1100 final drive offred to me for free. Had to say no.
When in doubt I do a part search on the years involved and see if they match or what the diffrence is.
Hope this helps.

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks! I know that it is possible to find GL1100 final drives for next to nothing and I would say it doesn't get much better than FREE.

Wishful thinking on my part.

thanks again for confirming.

I have done the mod on my 1200. It is not a direct bolt on but needs the 4 mounting bolts to be enlarged. the 1500 caliper bracket needs to be modified and a lower profile tire is used on the wheel.

I found a final drive on a 84 GL 1200 for $50 in really good shape. The bike had been wrecked and sitting with about 33,000 miles total.

When putting the drive gear on the wheel I found that the hub was just ever so slightly bigger than the opening on the drive gear with would not allow it to fulling insert into the wheel.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before and what was the easiest solution if so. My thought without having access to a mill or lathe is to take a dremel tool and carefully grind away the hub area for clearance to allow the gear to insert fully. How important is it to fit over the hub. Is it just clearance or does it need to be close enough to give some added support to the area in question? I didn't notice that it was that tight on the old drive gear hence my question.

As always I aprreciate you guys input on this as the knowledge in the forum is vast and accurate. There truly is no substitue for experience.

Steve
