Possible Head Gasket Problem

Postby themccrady » Mon Apr 11, 2016 1:55 pm

Ok Guys,

I'm fairly certain that I have a blown head gasket on my 85 Gl1200 I. Here is a list of symptoms:

1. Most annoying thing is that pressure keeps building up in system and causing my coolant res to overflow all over me.

2. Bike warms up to almost redline, before I decide to shut her down.

3. Notice dripping fluid out of right exhaust, and verified that it is dirty green antifreeze. This is only on startup, and after i shut down. I would think while riding, it is vaporizing.

4. After it gets nice and warm, I can shut it down, wait a few min, then restart and it pours that sweet white smoke.

I have the OEM head gaskets on the way, I ordered 2 so i could just knock out both sides at one to save me a hassle down the road. I'm hoping the heads are not warped and its just a shoddy gasket. Any advice would be helpful.

Cheers!

Jeff

yep... got impatient and pulled right side head.. it def was no good. I have to say that it was a pretty easy job to get it off. This week I will be working on cleaning the heads up. If i find them out of spec, would this procedure work to bring them level again? viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13935

The in house machine shop?

Cheers

Jeff

For me I would do just a little more. Why did it "blow" loose head bolts, warped head? Me, I would take to a machine shop, take the valves out and have checked for cracks, and flatness, pressure check. The other side, maybe just do the sandpaper thing. I just hate doing things twice cause i'm to cheap or lazy. But thats just me. Ive pulled maybe 40 heads from cars/trucks in my life, all the ones that were aluminium had some warpage somewhere. And more so cause your engine has run hot. Jst my .02

By the way, replace the thermostat, flush the cooling system, check the water pump make sure the fins aren't just banging around in there, replace the radiator hoses.Replace the radiator cap it can cause too much pressure in the system or not enough...either way it can cause overheating problems. Remember to change the oil after all this. Then you should be good for another couple yrs. Or as you say "got a little impatient". I know, now im telling you how to piss your money away. Hey do it right the first time...or just GIVE the bike to me and ill do it.

Good advice! I already have new thermostat, I checked the water pump and did not feel any jiggling. Radiator hoses are too easy not to do. I'm also gonna switch over to the non Honda hose clamps. Can I source a new radiator cap at my local Napa or other auto parts store?
