Rusty pipes.

Postby Rusty Bike » Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:25 am

I am about to drop the pipes on my SEi. i see significant rust on the inside of the pipes under the side shields below the engine. No holes but the pipes are leaking at the joints where the clamps are. I need new gaskets there, i know that. Anyhoo, is there any type of coating that i can put on the rusted areas to slow down mother nature. Good pipes are hard to find but mine are still pretty decent. I would like to wire wheel the rust and apply something to slow the rust. Any suggestions? Thanks

The best thing I would say is....its a type of powder coat for exhaust systems. A local guy was showing me some at a powder coat place. He used it on his Harley exhaust. Dont know the name of stuff off hand. You could google im sure.

LOL, Well the SEi is not rusty, it's actually pretty clean except the pipes where you can't see them.
My old Yamaha 750 Special is somewhat rusty. I bought it new in '78. I have it torn down right now while I paint the frame. That bike sat patently in my garage for 25 yrs waiting for me to bring it back to life. I rode it for the first time in 25 yrs. just before Christmas. It was like riding an old girlfriend, it felt good! The Yamy has been all over the country from New Orleans to Canada, never left me stranded even though I rode it hard. I was young and single then. Never wanted a big cruiser till now but will keep the Yamaha for those hot days when you don't want a fairing in front of you. The kids are grown and I'm 60. Time to ride again!...Rusty
