Midrange valve chatter?

Postby U771663 » Thu Apr 28, 2016 8:09 pm

Okay so I acquired this 1981 GL 1200 interstate. My father-in-law passed away and give it to me. The bike seems to be in pretty good shape however when you give it a little gas and it gets to about the 2000 on up RPM it sounds like the valves start rattling on the right side. I set the clearances and it still chatters just not as bad. I guess I need to go tiger on the clearances. One other thing when you give it gas the RPM doesn't want to come back down quickly it kind of just floats and then makes its way down. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated because my little girl is wanting to ride it so bad.

You dont say how many miles on bike. But could one of the cam lobes be flat or rocker arm face. Also if the fuel pump is on the right side they make a lot of racket at times.

The bike only has 27k. I recently removed the head to ge t a broke plug out. All the valves are adjusted correctly as well. I have noticed that the warmer the bike gets the less noise it makes. The only thing I can think of is maybe I put the oil orfice in backwards?

Something like an oil orifice, would think it was made to only go one way. But never had heads off one of these bikes....yet. I had an 84 for 9 yrs, 50,000 miles. Only put in a new stator, tires, oil, and filter. :) have you tried going to a heavier oil, maybe 20-50?

I just recently got this bike and done an oil change with recommend Honda oil from a reputable local bike shop 10w-40 syn blend. I don't know a lot about these bikes but in the past two weeks it has grown on me. Other than the slight ticking I love riding it.

What ever oil you use make sure its for a wet clutch. They say a little noise in a mechanical valve train, at least they're not too tight. ;) Just ride and enjoy.

You said that you had the head off? Did you check for broken valve springs? Or bad exhaust leaks. Im sure the sound was amplified being inside.

I retorqued the exhaust before I made the vidoe. I got up close to the exhaust while it was running. Pretty sure it isn't exhaust. I didn't check for broken springs or anything. Took the head off because of a broken plug.

I think I would take that valve cover off and check for anything unusual. Broken valve spring, missing valve spring keeper. Check spring on shafts. You put the right spark plug reach back in? I dont know, I give.

It's the plugs it calls for. It seems to run fine. I will take the valve cover off and recheck things.
