sombody help please im at my whits end

Postby Jwest1980 » Sun May 01, 2016 8:16 pm

If anyone could help I would very much appreciate it I have a 86 gl1200a and it won't start I've replaced the battery replaced the starter solenoid and even after doing both of those it still won't start it just clicks even when jumping the battery it won't start just clicks any input would be very helpful I love the bike when it's running and would be very upset if I end up having to scrap it but when I last talked to the Honda shop the guy said it would cost approx $1500 to replace the starter if that was the case and wasn't very helpful well I paid only $1750 for the Bike and to spend that kind of money on it already I couldn't afford oh and did I mention i've only had the bike three weeks now and really don't want to have to get rid of it already

I'm just guessing, but check the dog bone fuse next to the battery. Don't just look at it. Take it out and check for corrosion or if it's cracked.

Is the starter actually working? Short across the top terminals on the solenoid to check. If starter spins ok then the problem is with the solenoid. If starter doesn't spin when the terminals are shorted then the starter is bad. It may just need stripping and cleaning. No way would I pay those prices to replace it though. A used replacement can be found.

Just a click does mean that the starter solenoid is getting power through the 30 amp main dogbone fuse. That it won't turn over the engine can be 4 possible problems.
1.engine is hydrolocked...Attempt to turn the engine over by the rear wheel in 5th gear(remove the spark plugs if necessary)
2.Load test the battery...be positive the battery has enough power to crank the engine.
3.bypass the starter solenoid briefly with a screwdriver between the large studs...Only after you verify the engine can turn over...NOTE...this can cause some sparking.
4.if all the above still won't turn over the engine, its time to pull the starter for inspection/rebuild/replace.

Last note...Be positive that all battery connections and ground cable have been removed, cleaned and secured tight.

Also does anyone know if there is a way to test just the starter without removing it and is it possible that the wire from the solenoid to the starter might be bad or have come disconnected just wondering because I have a strong suspision the starter is ok and it might be something simple

When you push the start button and hear a click, does the starter get hot? You can test the starter by putting 12 volts to the cable lug. You can remove the starter and get it rebuilt for about $80 at almost any electric motor repair shop. Have you determined if the engine will actually rotate? Maybe it is locked up.
