I changed my timing belts on my '87 gl1200 this spring, and had the water pump outlet cover removed. The blades on the pump are metal, so my pump has been changed at some time in the past. I could feel a small amount of play when grabbing the blades with my fingers, and could see the play when looking closely. So, the question is.....is a bit of play normal, or should the shaft be tight? No leaks out the weep hole, temp gauge is at normal position. 120k miles on the bike, but don't know how many miles are on the water pump. I'm riding up into Canada later this summer, so am thinking I should tear things apart again and change the pump.

I would change it just for piece of mind. Is it to loose, will it make it the whole trip. I would change ASAP so you can have a few miles on the new pump before U leave. Incase there are some problems with it. I have never seen a water pump that had play....and didnt change.
