Grip diameter 7/8s or 1in.

Postby Detenator » Tue May 10, 2016 3:15 pm

I have a 1986 GL 1200 I with one piece tubular chrome bars. I wish to know if they r turned down in the grip area or are they straight 1in. diameter all the way. I am tryin to order replacements and cant find this information out. I pulled the turn switch assy. apart to see if I could see a step in the bar but I still cant tell weather the bars are turned down or not. Thank you!

no step on mine , it's just 1 inch . make sure you understand what you are getting for the throttle side , the turn signal side is easy . the reason I say that is from my experience the info is sketchy from some sellers .

They are stepped down on my Aspy, so 7/8".
Also they need to be 150mm long, which is about 20mm more than on most bikes.

You're right on both counts 7/8 left grip, 1" right grip. When you buy the pair, one will be 1" for the throttle tube. 150 mm for length. At least ut is for my stock bars

What? Would that not be true for all bars and grips? Because the throttle is always bigger that the other side? So far the only wingers that have answered this post ride Asps which have a 3 piece bar. I am on a Interstate which has a 1 piece round handle bar. I took a leap and ordered the 1inx150mm grips hope they fit. Thankx.

I believe that's how they were with mine as well. When you get them, check the diameters, one should be smaller than the other. I don't know what you mean by 3 piece handlebars, mine is all one piece. :?:

I keep getting replies saying they don't know what I am talking about when I say 3 piece bars. Clymer manual #M504 Honda GL 1200- 1984-87 page 307, show the bars that are on Aspencade SE-1 and Limited models. It clearly shows a multi piece handle bar system. On page 309 is the diagram for all other models. Which clearly shows a 1 piece round chrome handle bar. But nowhere does it tell you which bar is 7/8 and which one is 1in. Secondly all twist throttle motorcycles have two sizes of grips because of twist throttle. Therefore you buy grips according to the non throttle side. I was simply trying to find out if the one piece bar was 1in or turned down to 7/8. I put calipers on the bars and they measured a little over 1in, I think because of the chrome coating. I ordered 1in. I hope they fit. Thankx for the help. I have it covered.

That sounds like the same type of bar that was on the the older Saber and am sure others. Does this bar clamp onto the down tubes . Sounds like the same thing as on my Drag bike. Post a picture so we can see them
