Trouble disassembling an air shock on 1986 Interstate

Postby Mikeanthony » Sat May 14, 2016 1:56 pm

I am in the process of restoring an 86 Interstate. All of the suspension shocks leak so I want to rebuild everything. I have the rear air shocks off and I am trying to take one apart. There is no circlip fastener at the base of the shock (as are shown in a number of video clips) but there does seem to be a wire keeper set down into the body of the unit. I do not see any way to remove this clip because it is internally expanding and has no place for me to compress it. I would like to know how to remove this wire clip so that the seals and the other innards of the shock can be removed. Any help is appreciated.

That one sounds like the shock needs to be compressed some. I think I would take it somewhere ( machine shop?) and have them remove for me. I dont know how much pressure is on the wire. But I wouldnt want to get smacked in the face anyway. :o

Now that you mention it, that does sound a lot better than what I had in mind, although my plans never end in total disaster. It is just when they are put into action trouble usually occurs. Thanks
