Side Marker Lights on '85 Aspy

Postby MechDad » Sat May 14, 2016 9:35 pm

Hey all!
Thanks for such a great forum, it has been a ton of help as I do some major maintenance on my new-to-me '85 Aspencade.
One thing I have not been able to figure out is the side marker lights.

The lights look OEM, but the wiring does not. I am not 100% sure, as I only have the wiring diagram for an '86. The wires from the lights are black, but it looks like the PO connected them to brown and green wires, which are currently connected to nothing. Inside the left fairing pocket, there are two factory connectors that aren't connected to anything, could one of these be for the side marker lights? The brown connector has white, grey, orange, and green, and the red connector has green, red, and white/black stripe. (Yes, the other red connector is properly connected.)

Any thoughts or maybe a suggestion as to where else I could wire these in would be appreciated.
Thanks again,
Steve in Maine

Steve in Main, those are not stock lights. They used to be reflectors like my 85 Aspy. First I would check with DMV. Make sure they are legal to use on a motorcycle where they are. Some states dont care and others may.
Next make sure your charging system can handle the extra lights. Read about stator problems on this sight. then download a wire diagram from here or use a book and hook them to come on with other lights or own switch.
Just my .02 worth.

Thanks for the heads up twocams. Technically it would not pass Maine inspection because there are supposed to be reflectors "as far forward as reasonably possible."
I have read about stator problems on this site, and used the information I found to check my stator, and it is currently in good shape. The previous owner had a set of the Markland rear lights (I call them trailer truck lights...) connected to the accessory connection in the center fuse box. Since I have removed the Markland's, I am comfortable adding the two small lights, and it looks like I will connect these in the same place.
thanks again!
