And their still making a profit

We only have 3-4 auto parts stores in town.(pop 34,000). I forgot to get a 4 spade plug for my new relay while a O'reilly auto. Napa is a little closer so I got one there. I asked how much the plug was, he said $14 + some change. Do you have a military or old man discount, I asked. Ya, we can do something was the reply. How about $11.41. There isn't any tax here. But their still making a profit, probably only cost them .50 anyway.
Isnt America GREAT?

Every retail shop you buy from has a markup of some kind. They are in business to make a profit. Remember that NAPA store either has a lease or mortgage payment, it has to heat and cool the building, pay employees an hourly wage, turn the lights on, have working plumbing on site--that means usually a water bill, repaint and decorate the facility every so many years, maintain the parking lot, landscape the facility and keep the grass mowed and bushes trimmed, have the proper equipment such as a forklift all available and working, and I am sure a lot of stuff I have not thought of. And they have these costs before they sell the first product.

And the store has to be large enough to try to have the most common parts on hand ready for sale, like brake pads, batteries, and chemicals so you can get the part you need quickly and conveniently.

I suspect most retail stores have somewhere between a 30% to a 50% mark up on all items to be sold. But then they are trying to make a profit.

30 to 50 percent markup would be a dream for most businesses. You only see markups like that in specialty businesses and they need it to stay in business since they have a smaller customer base.

No I do not work for NAPA! I did work there as a driver, parts delivery, for a few years but it was just a part time to make some extra money job after I retired. I am just a retired POOR smuck also.

I worked for O'reilly auto parts as a delivery boy. Same thing something to do for extra $$. I just wanted to make an extra $300-400 a month. But they wanted me to work more...and more. Soon it was $1000 a month. After 1.5 yrs I told the manger I needed the summer off....just 3-4 months. He said no way, I said this is my 2 month warning, Ill let you know when I have 2 weeks left. Then I just quit.
