1985 GL1200 LTD PGs

Postby Gbrown4223 » Sat Aug 14, 2010 12:18 pm

Hello, can anyone tell me where the Pulse Generators are located on a 1985 GL1200 LTD? When bike gets warmed up it dies, and has no spark at the plugs.
Thanks for any info

The Pulse Generators are located inside the Timing Belt covers (lower front of engine) But you also want to check the 3 wire connector on the left side of the battery because they tend to get real hot and burn the wires off and melt the connector. To fix this problem (connector) just hard wire and solder them.

Very important to check those 3 yellow wires at the connector near the battery cuz theyre from the stator and you don`t want to burn your stator trust me , its a $1,000 plus job !!!!

On an '85 they are at the top centre rear of the engine beside the generator. They were not moved to the front till '86.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

The fuel injected LTD PGs are under the front timing cover. Different setup than the 1985 carb model.

The crank angle or NS sensor is located in the front of the engine under the timing belt cover on the '85 LTD, I know you asked about the pulse generators, but first of all look under the trunk, you will see the ecu, with diagnostic lights, that should come on momentarily, when you turn the ignition on and go out after about 5 seconds, on your dask you should see all of the lights come on, including a fuel system warning light, and go out, if when your bike gets hot and shuts off, look at the dash for fuel system warning light and look at the ecu lights under the trunk, to see if you have lights on. If both of those conditions are true then you have a crank angle sensor (NS sensor) going out intermittently> I chased that problem on my LTD and it seems that is a fairly common issue. There is a special supplement manual for the LTD, and it covers all of the diagnostic lights on the LTD ecu.

I will be glad to try and help you with the problem.

In addition, the advice about the stator wires is golden and should be done regardless, as well as checking frame grounds, one behind the voltage regulator, left side under false tank, one on right side under the coolant resevoir, also the negative cable off the battery, good time to look at the starter relay as well for corrosion, to the right side of the battery where the positive off the battery connects. Two fuses there, one for general power and one for fuel injection or includes fuel injection.

But the first thing to look at is those ecu lights

The 1985 GL1200 LTD Crank angle sensor(NS) is indeed also in the timing belt housing. It is located above the crank shaft. The pulse generator sensor is near the bottom of the housing. Cam angle sensors are at the right rear valve cover.

If your talking about the Pulse Generators, on 85 models they are at the front by the timing belts.

I have owned my 85 since 85...February 85.. still have it, they are there, I have changed them.
