Final Drive Oil Leak

Post by tbeiler » Sat May 28, 2016 10:39 am

Something very strange has happened. During the past winter I took final drive off for maintenance, cleaned off gunk, gear inspection, lubed splines and driven gear with moly, etc. Upon reassembly I put some gear oil in, this was synthetic 75W140 that I had left over from my Mercruiser stern drive maintenance. I did develop a leak past the two oil seals, last one being the drive shaft oil seal which I didn't replace when I reassembled. I did remove the final drive again and reassembled with a new drive shaft oil seal, thinking this was the problem, but It still leaked to some degree out of the rubber U joint boot. I then drained the old gear oil thinking that the synthetic gear oil I used was a bit too thin. So I put the correct Honda gear oil back in and since then I have put around 400 kms and now my leak has stopped. Does this make sense?
