84 aspencade 1200 problem with the headlight

Postby Delmindo » Mon May 30, 2016 11:04 am

The headlight won't come on when I start the bike. No low or hi beam either. I replaced the bulb and checked the fuse. No light still. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a head light relay? If so where is it located on the bike?

Hi, welcome to the forum. No relay. From the fuse, goes through the right handlebar combination switch (turns off headlight when starter button is pushed), over to the left combination switch (high/low beam), and to the headlight. Might try cleaning switches and connectors. Can be a pain. The wiring diagram below is for my '87, but I think they are the same.

I use Deoxit contact cleaner, but there are several good cleaners. Use one that is safe for plastic.

If you have a multimeter, you could also check for voltage at a couple of the connectors, for instance C61 in the wiring diagram. If no voltage there, check back at C78. If you want to do this, I could provide the connector pictures out of the electrical manual.

You will have to remove the false tank. Four bolts on my '87. The pictures below are from the 1987 Goldwing Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, but likely the same on your bike.

According to the circuit diagram, your ground network is likely OK if your right front turn signal works. But, since you don't have any headlight, it would be worthwhile to check for continuity between battery ground and the green wire at the headlight connector. Disconnect the negative battery for that test.

OK, from the fuse, your Aspencade should have a blk/red wire going through connector C2.

Next connector is C78. The blk/red wire goes into the start switch, the blu/wht wire comes back out of the start switch.

Next are connectors C61 and C62. The blu/wht wire goes through C61 and into the high/low beam switch, the blue wire comes out of the high/low switch and to connector C62.

Last connector before headlight is C58.

Last connector is C12 at the rear of the headlight.

If you have a test light see if you have power on both sides of the fuse. ( ohm meter). Test lights are easier and quicker to use to find out where power is and not. For the fuse, hook the clamp to a good ground ( battery -) or frame. Use the light end and stick, put it on each of those to metal pieces on top of the fuse with the key on. Your test light, light should turn on. On each metal piece. This is before you start tearing the whole bike apart.
Also test your test light on your battery, make sure the bulb is working. I tried for a half hr. one time looking for power on an old car. Bulb on my test light was burned out. :(

The simpler the troubleshooting can be, the better. The headlight is not a complicated system, but does go through a couple of switches that can cause problems in an old bike. I think that with the info you now have, you shouldn't have too many problems finding the issue. Keep us informed.

Thank you! I cleaned the start button control and it worked.
