LOST SOME LIGHTS

Postby redjetty » Fri Jun 10, 2016 9:27 pm

Just got bike back 87' aspencade, from local shade tree shop having new plugs, clean and sync carbs, new air cut off valve, new fuel filter. Now I have no headlights no turn signals, no brake lights, no horn and no air suspension capabilities.. I have driving lights all the way around, and all my dash lights.and radio works.... When asking the man that worked on it, he said its the 20 amp relay in the fuse box,,, I had it pulled and had it bench tested at another shop,, tested ok,,,, i put it back in the bike and all the lights and everything worked properly,,, the next day i checked it ,, all was ok,, i pulled it out of the garage to the curb turning it off , went inside one more time before jumping on for a nice ride and again,, everything mentioned above stopped working again,,, ive piddled with it all day and cant get it going,,, low and behold i wont be taking it back to the man that did the work,,,,, any suggestions before hauling it to the Honda of the Ozarks in springfield mo,,,, ( they do work on older bikes),,, thanks rj ps,,,, yes the bike starts and runs fine,,

Sounds like the 20a relay is bad. Did you try another one?

Relays do go bad. take a test light or ohm meter and see if you have power on both sides of the relay with the key on. Not sure how many wires you have? Use a wire schematic and see what wire on relay goes to those components. Should have power....right.

The fellow who worked on your bike did not cause this problem. A relay is an electrically powered switch. Just because is clicks does not mean it will pass current across the contacts. Could be that the contacts are burnt. It may test OK with an ohm meter across the contacts but when a real load is applied, the contacts can't do the job. There may also be a bad connection somewhere in the bike wireing. A plug near the relay may be corroded. Jumping out the proper contacts in the relay socket would show if this is the case. If everything works with a properly applied jumper, you have a bad relay. Don't try this if you don't know what you are doing, you may fry something. Get a new relay and stick it in there. If that does not fix it, take it to a good mechanic.
