New (old) Wing and a few questions
Hello all,
After grueling 19 hour round trip on a borrowed CB1100, I was convinced to never do that gain.
I had a buddy who had offered me his old Wing about a year or so ago, so I called him and decided to take him up on it.
Finally closed the deal and got it home yesterday. It's an 85 GL1200I with about 58 thousand (mi) on the clock.
Here is the 'Geezer Glider' after a good wash up, getting about a year and a half's worth of barn dust off of it.
When I picked it up he handed me a bunch of spare bits including the right hand side plug cover/trim (chrome piece, not sure exactly what it's called) Of course he misplaced the screws for it. When looking at how to throw it back on, I noticed he had 'misplaced' about 3 or 4 of the lower fairing screws as well. So my question is, are they all the same size & thread pitch? If so does anyone have that off of the top of their head?
Also this Inerstate has an aftermarket radio/casette installed, but there is no antenna. So off to Amazon I went looking for one. Now the mount for this is huge, like 5/8" or so huge (actually mic'ed it at 15mm tapering to 16mm at the base.
Now I assume (uh oh, I know how that works out) that it's for the combo cb/radio antenna. Is this correct? The scooter doesn't have a CB, just am/fm. I don't want to spend a lot and would ideally like a stubby little antenna for this. Can someone point me in the right direction, or at least inform me what base I have (sorry no pics)
Thanks.
I'm sure I'll have LOTS more questions

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
Sure come to the table with the hardest questions first.
I would take a screw from somewhere else on the fairing, or bike and screw into the hole until you find one that works. Then go to town with it. I would use any radio antenna you like, with right cord length. just my .02 worth.

Get out of here with your logic and stuff!
I was hoping to swing through town on my way home today & pick some screws up at the Ace, Oh well I guess it'll wait for another day.
As to the mount, I'll search Fleabay & Amazon for a new one. Thanks.

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
on the antenna, when I had my 1200 I took an old CB whip antenna for a truck and used it, the antenna was too big for the base so I stripped back some wire and wrapped it around the base then installed the antenna, worked perfect. on my first 1500 I used one of those universal stubby flexible antennas and it was a perfect fit. as long as your cable under the seat is good you can replace the end with anything you want
as for the screws I think they are # 6 or maybe # 8 and most are between 1/2 to 1 1/4 long depending what it holds. if I remember a standard machine screw will work but you should go the stainless route as they will be exposed to the elements. most boat supply stores will carry the better screws. maybe find some at a good Ace hardware store

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
If it's like my '87, the screws are M6 which you can buy at Ace. The problem is that there are special washers that recess into the fairing. I think you can still buy them from Honda. As far as the antenna goes, I got one on eBay that has no mast and just tucks inside the fairing so there's no mounting required. Works great here in WNY.

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
A lot of the hardware is available from Honda. Go to a site like Partszilla and look at the fiche for the correct screws. I am doing this on my, new to me, old Wing. I want to keep the bike as correct as possible. As stated above, there are collar washers on the fairing screws to prevent the plastic from cracking at the fasteners. OEM hardware is fairly cheep IMO.
Congratulations on the bike. She looks sweet! Good luck with her...Rusty

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
Thanks everyone, I couldn't wait.......pulled the screws from the other side and ran back into town. They are indeed M6 x 1 x 20's
I'll have to look at that site for the collar washers. I need 3 of those. Couldn't find anything remotely close at Ace.

I located some that are aluminium. Might look a little better with the stainless cap screws

Re: New (old) Wing and a few questions
I use a hidden antenna. That is, one that just plugs into the existing connector and simply sits under the seat. These are cheap and easily available from ebay or just about anywhere. It works great, and no special mounting.
