GL 1200 Aspencade got to the stop sign and died

Postby jasonpierce311 » Thu Aug 19, 2010 10:41 pm

I was on my way to work got to the stop sign at the highway and everything went dead! No power to anything with the key in any position. I tested the battery ( easy to get to ) and also checked the fuses. It was getting dark so I pushed it home. Any ideas before I blow it up! Thanks....

With the key on, wiggle the battery cables both pos and neg. Do the the same with the smaller wires around the solenoid switch. Replace the main fuse if you are still running the original. I replaced mine with a standard ATO plug-in fuse from the autoparts store.

It took me a while but I did find the part number for the switch assembly. I haven't tried the main fuse yet. I am going to be trying that tomorrow... Thanks for the replies and ideas.

You probably don't need the entire switch assembly, just the contact base. But definitely check the main fuse before you invest a lot of money. Since these bikes are known for developing electrical gremlins, get yourself a good multimeter. It's a life saver for diagnosing electrical issues.

Also i would check those 3 yellow wires at the connector right besides the battery , they`re the stator wires , if you still have the connector , just take the connector off and weld the wires together otherwise it will end up burning your stator and you don`t want that trust me , its a $1000 plus job and `84 Aspy are known for stator problems , i myself changed about 100 when i was a bike mecanic !!!!
