1986 GL1200 Digital Speedometer Inoperative

Postby NITROBANDIT » Mon Jul 04, 2016 4:01 pm

Hi All,
I have a 1986 GL1200 Aspencade I bought just a few weeks ago and the digital dash/speedo does not work. I have an electrical background in the automotive industry so I checked the speed senor out at the 3 pin connector under the left side of the tank cover. Testing confirmed good ground, good supply voltage, but the reference voltage was very low (2 volts dc and down while turning the wheel), so I am condemning the sensor. Does anyone know where you can find these units? I thought about trying to maybe replace the diodes and resistors myself but I have had zero luck finding the specs on the internals. Anybody got any ideas?

It is a hall effect sensor, and I do remember reading somewhere (maybe even on this site) where someone took it apart and rebuilt it using a new off-the-shelf sensor. It took some tweaking to get the positioning right, but it did work.

Have you also checked the plastic gear on Left side front wheel that drives the sensor, Mine was kaput, so my speedo, turn signal canceller were not working. Once gear was replaced it all works the way it should.
