Asbestos

Are the OEM exhaust gaskets/bushings made of asbestos. Sure looks like it. I just got a face full of the stuff when I dropped my rusty pipes!

Asbestos was band in the USA in 1977. So most likely not used on your Wing. But there again, did other countries get the same memo? :o

I'll bet money these gaskets are asbestos. I work construction in the rust belt. I'v seen plenty of it.

All the OEM exhaust gaskets I've seen on Gold Wings that I've worked on looked some like a compressed steel mesh like stuff. I've never seen anything that looks like asbestos used?
I have new ones for both 1200 & 1500 hanging downstairs but I never took them apart to see what they were .... I know old ones come apart easily and new ones are compressable some and have a feeling of graphite about them.

The use of asbestos is not banned in the US, below quotes and source

2013 More than 50 countries have banned asbestos – but the USA has not.
http://www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org/education/timeline
2015 USGS reported, “Asbestos consumption in the United States was estimated to be about 360 tons.”

That gasket, when I was looking at it, looked like fiberglass impregnated with graphite, but I have no idea what it is made of

Mine is a wound in layers, thick papery white gasket, reminds me of a toilet paper roll. Crumbly fibrous when disturbed. Not fiberglass. This looks nothing like the new OEM ones I purchased. No sign of this bike ever being apart. This is between the headers and the muffler at the two bolt clamp. Bike is 86 SEi. Not Good!
