GL1200 TuneUP

Postby frozentundra » Wed Jul 13, 2016 11:19 pm

Just bought a naked 1984 GL1200 with 15,000 miles. Its running rough during acceleration. I suspect the carbs may need to be cleaned and balanced but thats just a hunch. Does anyone know of a good wing mechanic in Wisconsin. Back in the day I would have
attacked maintenance with Dad. Now I need some help.

Thanks

Who does the maintenance on your GL1800? The 1200 should be easier. Not so many dodads and gizmos.

I use my Honda dealer for my 2008 Goldwing 1800. They are a great dealership. Certainly I could use them for the GL1200 but every Honda dealer I've gone to so far are not particularly fond of working on vintage bikes. The 1984 GL 1200 is not what they do. I can accept that. Most of their mechanics may not have been born in 1984.

I want to find someone who is working on older Goldwings and will be familiar with the issues.

I have told others on this sight.....get a book. You will need it to do basic things to your bike if you're going to keep it. Things like changing the fuel filter/oil filter. Those are things you can do and wont cost $75 hr. It doesnt have to be a Honda specific bike shop. Any shop that works on older bikes that can work on carburetors. If the bike has carbs it won't have fuel injection/computer.

You are right about the young guys. They are taught how to hook their laptop up to the bikes on board computer. ( same with newer cars). They just go down a checklist....very little trouble shooting involved.

The stealership I was using is the one that referred me to an independent shop. Guys working there used to work a stealers, got fed up started their on shop. Most have all the training on the older bikes. Ask around, (or google) you'll find them.
