Oil change from regular oil to amsoil

Postby Ghostriderou812 » Sun Jul 17, 2016 8:45 pm

Hi guys

I have been using regular oil I'm my '84 Interstate since I bought it without any issues. Two days ago I replaced the oil with Amsoil and now I'm having an issue where the clutch won't completely disengage.

I used to release the clutch about 3/4's oF the way out and it would grab. Now I only have about halF inch of play and it engages.but when I pull it back in the bike still wants to roll and shifting is rough because of it not fully disengaging.

It seems to coincidental that I changed to Amsoil and all of a sudden I have an issue. Is there anyone else who has experienced this?

I appreciate any feedback anyone can offer.

Thanks Cam

sounds like the discs are sticking together , It probably shifts clunky also . IMO go back to the regular oil and forget that overpriced stuff ,, do you have a reason for wanting to change oil types ??

Thanks for the reply that's what I'm going to do. I kinda broke my own rule of " of it ain't broke don't fix it" !! My buddy uses it so thought I'd try it. I'm going back to the usual tomorrow. I'll dump it and the filter and replace it with my usual brand. Hope that clears it up.

Thanks again

After changing work your clutch lots of times slowly so the oil can flush everything out from between discs, then just go normal. It shouldn't take long to get back to like before.. hope it helps.

What I would think happened is, the amsoil, being high detergent, loosened up any gunk that may have been there and it is interfering with the play of your clutch plates. I suspect that a bit of running with the synthetic still in might finish the clean up job and you might begin to operate correctly. That would be the time to flush it out, with all the gunk. The foregoing, of course, could be totally off the mark. Just my experience with older cars/bikes and first fill of Amsoil. Personally, I would have used a crankcase cleaner in the old oil for a while prior to putting the Amsoil in.

I hope things turn out for you.

It may also be a worn clutch lever bushing that just happened to screw up at this time. Sounds like you do regular maintenance so gunked up engine/clutch is unlikely IMO. I feel it is a mechanical problem somewhere in the clutch system.

Hi guys

Thanks for all of your replies and advice I appreciate it. I drained the synthetic and replaced it with the oil I've been using all along and after a bit of a ride it's operating as well as or better than before. Glad to be rolling again!!

Thanks again

If you don't mind saying, how dirty was the Amsoil when you took it out? Just curious.
