I bought a used starter off of ebay about 2 and a half years ago and because I was traveling I never compared it to my bike. After reading several other threads I think i ended up with an '84 starter. I got to put it into my 87' interstate.
The 2 holes on the starter almost match but not quite. My previous chinese knock off starter only had one hole used for a couple years.
Has anyone ever cut a slot into the bolt hole on the '84 and mounted it to the '87 or another non-'84? Im thinking of going that route, just tossing in a washer to make sure its tight.

I would not use the 84 on your 87 the 84 starter was made for one year and is the only starter that will fit on the 84s. You could sell it as it is a hard item to find and you could get a good price for it. I would go to e-bay and see if you can find one for your bike or have yours fixed.---------------------Hal
