Replacement of GL1200A fuel pump

Postby TexasHippie » Wed Jul 27, 2016 12:13 pm

I have a question about using the fuel pump from a Honda Prelude.
It mounts right on no problems, does make a clicking sound (not noticeable when riding).

I put one on my 87 GL1200A, and now it seems to be running rich.
When idling you can smell gas.
I was getting 45 mpg, then with new fuel pump i am now getting 25 mpg.
Is their anything I can do to improve my mpg?
I have checked for leaks and found none.

Does not make since to me.

Thanks in advance for any help with this problem.

Sounds like maybe to much fuel pressure. Have you checked what the new pump is putting out compared to what the book calls for? May have to resynchronize the carbs also.

Make sure the Prelude pump you bought is for the carb model and not the fuel injected model. I installed the carb model in a friend's 1200 last week and it's running great now.

I agree with twocams, I also think it is too much fuel pressure. Was supposed to be the same pressure as stock pump (3-4psi, 2-4psi with original). I do not know how to check the pressure.

Also in answer to DCoop44, it is for carb model (Prelude) and not the fuel injected model.

Looks like I need to go back with a used pump for GL1200. (since they do not make this pump anymore)

Anyone know anything about the New after market pumps on ebay?

I bought one off ebay for around $23 US. Seller had sold a whole gob of them. Its black, but matches my new tires. :D Put around 400 miles on with it, works like a new one.

It has a warranty but dont remember how long. 2 yrs sounds good to me, most electrical things are like 6 months. If price is right how can U go wrong.

Good point, just hate to buy another pump after the $67.00 (with tax).
Now $42.63 from United Kingdom for another pump. (with 2 year warranty and free shipping)

Maybe I can find another use for the prelude pump.
