Starter button won't crank the motor

Postby Ghiveley » Fri Sep 16, 2016 2:38 pm

Starter will crank if I jump the lugs on the starter relay. The button does send a signal to the new relay but will not activate the starter. Fuse link is good, kill switch is in on position. Bike is in neutral. I'm at a loss at what to check next. Any suggestion are appreciated.

Starter button contacts may be dirty. Wiring harness connectors may be dirty. The start switch button circuit is failing under load. Trace out wireing and clean everything involved with the circuit. Do get the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual available on Ebay. Indispensable info on all systems. Good luck

i had that problem with my 1100 when i replaced the starter solenoid. have you tried reversing the connector on the relay? depending on where you get these relays, they can be "mirror image" parts so you have to reverse the 4 prong harness.

ya yes, the dreaded burned out clutch switch. my 1100 goes thru front brake switches like crazy. i always keep at least 3 of them on hand in my electrical box in case one goes out while im on the road. hell, they're cheap enough. sometimes you can use some WD40 on them to unstick them in a pinch if you dont have an extra one. i found out that these switches hate moisture. while i was down in Florida i had to replace 2 of them.
