Like Bru49 's whining noise, my '86 GL1200 just started making a sort of "popping" noise that seems to be coming from the front of the bike just under the handlebars/fork area. It kinda sounds like backfiring. Also, the idle seems to be running just a little rough. I just had the fork seals replaced with new fluid, etc. but that shouldn't effect how the motor runs, should it?? Any ideas??

Find out were the noise is coming from. If it is a backfire in the air filter box that would cause a rough idle. When taking the forks out you might have hit or pulles on the coil wires causeing a loose connection. Pulling wires even by accident is never a good thing. Check around in that area and mke sure all the connections are still clean and tight.
How many times do I have to tell ya,,, The right tool for the right job!
