Fuel Questions & Idle speeds

Postby hansjschmitz » Fri Aug 14, 2009 4:34 pm

Anyone out there tracking their fuel milage?

I have an '86 Aspencade. I have tracked the last few tanks and am wondering if i am getting decent mileage or not. The two tanks i used around the city got me an average of 33 mi. to the gallon. The two tanks after were all cruising and i got an average of 38 mi. to the gallon. I am by no means a small guy, i am 300 lbs so i know i will not get optimal mileage, haha, but i have heard of peopel getting 45+ mi. to the gallon on even these older bikes.

As well, the tank on these are 5.8 gallons aren't they? My fuel gage is showing i am empty (1 bar left on the digital gages) and when i fill it i am only putting in about 3.5 - 3.8 gallons in. Is my fuel indicator off or does it do this on purpose so you do not run out of gas?

Finally, i am idling at about 1080-1140 rpm, is this about right or too high? I know my civic idles around this speed too so i would assume it's about right but i am not sure. ANy input is helpful!

I can easily get 30 mpg if I ride carelessly with lots of hard acceleration. If I ride at an average of around 55-60 mph, very constant, no acceleration, I have gotten upwards of 45 mpg. 38 mpg sounds about right for you, and is usually around what I average.

Remember that there is reserve as well - I assume you aren't running the bike to empty and switching to reserve before refilling.

There is no reserve on the 1200 series.
When the red light comes on there is about 4 liters left in the tank.

I didn't know that! What about the 1500 and 1800? Any reserve on those?

I have an 85 Interstate with 92,000 miles on it and I get about 35 mi / gal. As for the idle speed I've set mine at 960 rpm.

Hi Hans,
idlespeed seems ok, Honda recommends 1000 revs/min.
Mileage - I get app. 18 - 20 kms/L = a little more than 1o miles/L.
I'm in no hurry what so ever, if I go more than 60 miles/h I'm going very fast. I enjoy cruising leasurely through the countryside avoiding highways whereever I can.
