1985 ASPY. PULLING rear DRIVE

Postby HALBUDD » Tue Oct 05, 2010 7:49 pm

I have a 1985 GW aspy. that is having a bad leak coming out of front rubber boot. I have a 84 aspy parts bike that I have used the u joint to fix my 85 . I pulled the rear drive off of the parts bike and found it in great shape no leaks,I need to know if I pull the rear end off of the 85 by taking the four nuts off of the rear drive can I pull the whole drive shaft and u joint out or is there something that holds the u joint on to the out put shaft. The fluid is rear end and not oil as it has the same smell. Tanks Hal.

You can take the shaft out but the universal will stay in, you will need to remove the swing arm to get at the U joint

Thanks again tricky as I have been trying to figure out the best way to put the good drive in to my 85 aspy. When I pulled it out of my parts the u joint was already off I just was wondering if the whole thing would come out easy or if like you said do i need to pull the swing off. Thanks again tricky for the advise look forward hearing from you again.Hal

I just pulled the final drive off my 86 Interstate. Came out without the u-joint. I tried to remove the swing arm without success. I made the tool to remove the lock nut on the left side, but I still could not get it loose. I dropped the exhaust and it allowed the swing arm to go down far enought to get the U-joint out in the gap at the boot. The fun is going to come when I try to put the new replacement in.

Just an update pulled the old leaking rear drive and put the new one in only took about 6hrs.Put good coating of molly on all splines and rear drive. Was not to bad getting the shaft back in to the u-joint worst part was getting the rubber boot back on.Working good now and no more leaks !! Thanks guys Hal
